Recreation Specialist (Sports Coordinator)

Summary This position is located at Naval Support Activity Mid-South, TN.
, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) , in the Joe Dugger Fitness Center.
The position provides and promotes sports and general recreation for military personnel and their family members, authorized DOD civilian and contractor personnel for base and tenant commands.
The purpose of this position is to supervise the assigned athletic facility/ facilities and direct facility sports/ fitness events.
Responsibilities Athletic Duties &
Responsibilities:
The incumbent is responsible for directing and controlling all subordinate functions within the division which may include:
preparing plans and schedules; establishing and evaluating mid-range and long range objectives; reviewing and approving requirements and request for resources; preparing and reviewing incoming and outgoing correspondence, reports, statistical data, directives, instructions and marketing plans.
The incumbent must work closely with other departmental managers to ensure success of programs and to help in developing and implementing marketing plans to ensure the widest dissemination of information to the customer of the programs supported.
Responsible to coordinate all sports programs and provide technical guidance as required.
Coordinates with outdoor maintenance support staff proper preparation of gym and outdoor fields for intramural competitions.
Shall provide a full service gymnasium to include, but not limited to, sports clothing, equipment issue, maintenance of equipment and good housekeeping of facilities.
Supervise the safe operation of the facility/ facilities including indoor/outdoor courts, locker rooms, multiple sports fields, lockers/ saunas/ restrooms, office area, outdoor/ indoor storage compounds, plus surrounding outdoor grounds.
Be responsible for custody and maintenance of all vehicles, equipment and facilities during assigned hours.
Incumbent works with Fitness Director to ensure that fire, safety, security, and sanitation inspections are conducted and routine maintenance is performed as directed.
When deemed necessary, delegates' remedial action applicable to correct deficiencies.
Ensures work requests are submitted through the facility supervisor.
Monthly, performs safety training with staff and monitors progress on ESAMS.
Assist with the development of programs, events and activities for the assigned gymnasium/ fitness complex.
Organizes, schedules, and administers leagues, tournaments and special events as directed by Fitness Director.
Assist with conducting organizational meetings, preparing league schedules, coordinate with officials, keep records and standings, procure and present awards for assigned athletic events.
Plans and schedules use of all indoor/outdoor sports facilities during assigned hours.
Coordinate with local commands regarding scheduling and utilization of athletic facilities for practices, games, PRT's and special events.
Conducts program evaluations for review by the Fitness Director.
Supervisory Duties:
Exercises time card and leave authority.
Makes or approves selections for subordinate non-supervisory positions.
Effects minor disciplinary measures as verbal and written warnings and recommends other actions in more serious cases.
Plans and establishes work schedules, deadlines and standards for acceptable work.
Recommend awards and bonuses for non- supervisory personnel.
Finds ways to improve production or increase the quality of work directed.
Identifies developmental and training needs of employees and provides for or arranges needed individual development and training.
Hears and resolves complaints from employees.
Refer group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to the Fitness Director.
Ensure accurate completion of assignments and provides assistance when necessary.
Maintains and updates employee training records when required.

Must possess knowledge of Navy physical fitness standards to enable the employee to competently and independently carry out fitness activities sports programming and be able to adapt standards to local applications with wellness of entire population being of primary concern and the skill in the application and utilization of such knowledge in planning and carrying out an enhanced fitness program that meets as fully as possible the needs of the participating community.
Skill in the effective management of the financial and physical resources of the program.
Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations relating to fitness.
Skill in effectively organizing and utilizing available resources within the program framework of non-appropriated fund procurement and accounting procedures in order to prepare purchase order requests required to support programs.
Detailed knowledge of financial recording of obligations incurred as part of the program.
Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability to effectively promote a safe and healthy fitness program.
Must have the knowledge of Navy and local directives governing fitness activities and the ability to enforce safety requirements as it relates to techniques and equipment.
Must have the ability to speak effectively about the program and to motivate interested groups of active duty personnel and their family members in related activities and programs.
Must be a mature individual who can work with large groups of people or individuals as necessary.
Excellent written and verbal communication and interview skills are required to assess patron's, and assist with the promoting and marketing the program.
PERSONAL CONTACTS Contacts are to obtain information, educate, instruct and motivate current and potential military members to obtain optimal results from the fitness program.
The incumbent must exercise good judgment and display a sound personal character and cooperative demeanor in serving the military community PHYSICAL DEMANDS The incumbent is required to have an adequate level of physical fitness as position requires considerable walking, standing, kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching and lifting of objects weighing up to 45 pounds, unassisted as necessary to provide techniques of fitness and use of equipment WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is normally performed in a gymnasium with adequate light, heat and ventilation, however, some activities involve everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of this specialty.
Education A Bachelors Degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Health, Physical Fitness or Exercise Physiology is preferred, but may be substituted by an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Must possess a minimum of one year documented experience in sports and fitness with a minimum of one year in a lead or supervisory position; strongly preferred.
Incumbent must possess a broad total experience in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation field, or possess equivalent significant experience gained in private industry, the military and/or comparable business functions.
Applicant must have knowledge to design instructional opportunities to assist individuals in developing a multitude of sport specific skills and facilitate clinics in proper play, rules and regulations of sports activities which they may not be familiar with.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
specific training and understanding of all forms of exercise, and nutrition and wellness, manage fitness and associated programs, wide range of fitness equipment including resistance and/or selectorized machines, computerized cardiovascular equipment and free weights.
